Food/Gourmets: Gift from Miketsukuni

Super Shima Gourmets!!

There are many attractive local specialties produced by nature and the climate of Shima. Enjoy to your heart’s content the food of Shima, known as “Miketsukuni” (Country that provided food for the Imperial Palace)


awabi (abalone)

Women divers for awabi(abalone) carefully harvest Shima’s natural awabi one by one. Awabi is a byword for exclusive cuisine. There are various ways of serving the awabi, but simple raw awabi and baked raw awabi are exquisite.

“Anori-fugu”
(tiger puffer fish)

“Anori-fugu”(tiger puffer fish) is striped tiger puffer fish, a type weighing more than 700 g that is caught in Enshu-nada, Isewan Bay and Kumano-nada. The fish are shipped to Shimonoseki, which is thought of as the Mecca of tiger puffer fish, as well as to the Kansai area. The quality is excellent and the flavor is exquisite.


Ise Ebi Lobsters

The center of Ise Ebi Lobsters could be nowhere else than Ise Shima. The lobster’s elastic and firm body is excellent whether boiled or grilled. See and taste the luxury of live lobster, too.

Matoya-kaki  oyster

Matoya-kaki oyster is famed throughout the country; gourmets rave about them. They are definitely an exclusive brand. Known as the “Milk of the sea” they are filled with nutrition and can be eaten raw. A must.


Katsuo (bonito) Chazuke

Katsuo (bonito) Chazuke is bonito soaked in soy sauce, layered atop a bowl of rice over which tea is poured. A local favorite, its’ simple taste is very special.

Tekone-Zushi

Tekone-Zushi, one of the most famous local cuisines, started with fishemen creating ‘instant’ lunchboxes by placing a piece of bonito soaked in soy sauce and condiments atop vinegared rice. It is said that they used their hands to eat it.


Dried fish

Fresh fish dried in the sun to capture the natural taste; ideal as a night snack or with sake.
