The sea is like a mother

 Four years ago I decided to move to Shima. The main reason was its close proximity to the sea. I love the sea and around the coastline of Shima we can see her in all her guises.

The ‘Bather’s Sea’ is quiet and relaxing. She is gentle in her embrace and you can play with her at Goza.

Meanwhile the ‘Surfer’s Sea’ at Kounohama and Ichigohama can be loud. Waves crash on the sandy shore and surfers flock here to test their skills against her will. The ‘Fisherman’s Sea’ is unpredictable and can be calm or rough. Her mood is at the mercy of the weather while the bounties that lie within are immune to these vagaries.

You can see her at Anori or Daio. Finally, there is the ‘Picture’s Sea’. She is a delight for Instagrammers who can capture the stunning scenery where land eets sea. This sea can be found in Yokoyama and Tomoyama.

It is these many aspects of the sea that draw me to her and also why I love it here in Shima. I have always loved the sea but never really knew why? One day I was talking about this with Okuno sensei, a renowned teacher of assical literature. We were discussing metaphors when I realized that I love the sea because it reminds me of my mother. In French the words for sea “mer” and mother “mere” are pronounced the same. In Japan the Shinto God of the Sea ‘Suijun’ is also the God of Motherhood.

In a way the sea is like a mother. She can cradle you in her gentle waves and be a calming influence but she can also get angry. She can be fun to play with but first and foremost she nourishes and takes care of you. When I look out at the sea I feel a kind of serenity I knew as a child in the arms of my mother. 美しい海があるからです。ここには海のすべてがあるのです。御座白浜のよ

うな海水浴場。この海は静かで見ていると気持ちがゆったりしてすてきで

す。サーファーの海は、砂浜に波が打ち寄せる騒々しい海。国府の浜や市後

の浜がそう。漁師の海。この海は予想がつかない海。静かだったり、荒れた

り、荒れるからまた引き寄せられるのですが。安乗や大王の海がそう。最後

に、写真で見る海、インスタグラマーには人気がある海です。海と山の美しい風景がある海です。横

山や登茂山の海がこんな感じ。志摩には海のすべての表情があります。

私はずっと海が好きだったけれど、それがなぜなのかは分かりませんでした。古典文学で有名な

奥野先生と比喩について話していました。その時理解しました、私が海がこんなにも好きなのは、

それが私の母を思い出させるからだと。フランス語で、「海（mer）」と「母（mere）」は同じ発音です。

日本でも、海の神である水神は母性の神です。このように考えると、海は母に似ています。母という

のは、優しい波のゆりかごで私たちを落ち着かせてくれます。しかし、海のように怒ることもあり

ます。一緒に遊ぶのも楽しいですが、何よりも、母は私たちを世話し食べ物を与えてくれます。海を

見ると、母の腕に抱かれている時のように穏やかな気持ちになります。
