Winter is finally over. The cherry

trees have blossomed and soon

we will enjoy the taste of their

fruits. Every time I see a cherry

tree, I think of the French song “Le

temps des cerises”, also known in

Japanese as the “Sakuranbo No Minoru Koro”. You might

know the “Porco Rosso” or the Yves Montand’s versions.

In “Le temps des cerises”, each season represent a state of

love. The cherry time, spring and summer, represent the

happiness of being in love while in fall, as the cherries fall

on the ground, so does our love leaving us with nothing

but pain. Does it remind you of anything? The “waka”,

the traditional Japanese songs. In Japanese poetry, love

is usually related to the seasons and is always about the

misfortune of love. If you have been to the bunraku festival

in Anori, you might have noticed that the story rarely

ends well… Like in this song, spring and summer usually

represents love while fall and winter represents despair.

Although most songs represent autumn as the beginning

of the end of a relationship, I like to see autumn as the

evolution of a relationship. In the French song “Octobre”

by Francis Cabrel, autumn is here, the sun is hiding, vases

are empty, it could be winter soon but the man brings

flowers and a colourful tablecloth to save his relationship,

to remain in October forever. I find this song beautiful as

it reminds us that we are the ones who can protect each

other from failed loves. I hope we can all bring colour in

our life and enjoy this coming up summer for as long as

possible.
